The Philadelphia Eagles became Super Bowl champions against the Kansas City Chiefs.
In 2023, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles went head to head in Super Bowl 57. It was a devastating loss for the Eagles, with an outcome of 38 to 35. The defensive line for the Eagles suffered a great loss as their attempts for sacks ran short.
Howe Roseman, this year’s general manager, constructed a new defensive line. This addition was the key to the Eagles success.
In the first half Cooper DeJean defensive back executed an incredible interception against Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes, quickly putting the Eagles on the scoreboard. Following the interception, Eagles linebacker Josh Sweat made the first sack of the game.
With their plays already decided, Eagles planned for their fourth down to kick a field goal in order to get the three extra points. Eagles kicker Jake Elliot increased their lead by 48 yards and also got the three extra points resulting in 10-0.
In the first half, the Chiefs managed to fight back when safety Bryan Cook intercepted a pass made by Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. A little bit into the second quarter, Eagles linebacker Jalyx Hunt got another sack for the Chiefs, establishing a greater defense than what the Chiefs remember back in 2023. During the second quarter, yet another one of Mahomes’ passes got intercepted by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun giving them yet another touchdown. Resulting in the score 24-0.
Taking the lead against the Chiefs in the second half of the game, the thought of a Kansas City comeback was far in sight. Continuing on Eagles ball fourth-down stop, Hurts followed through with a 46 yard throw, connecting wide receiver DeVonta Smith into the endzone for another touchdown.
Finally after three quarters, the Chiefs got a touchdown by rookie receiver, Xavier Worthy who gained a 24 yard score. With long pass plays by Mahomes, the ending score for the third quarter was 34-6.
Into the fourth quarter, kicker Jake Elliot executed more field goals that put the Eagles in a more comfortable position than before. During this quarter, the Chiefs were able to score two more touchdowns from receivers DeAndre Hopkins and Xavier Worthy. Leading the final score to be 40-22.
Stats from The Bleacher Report, MVP winner Jalen Hurts concluded with two touchdowns and an interception. Going 17-22 for 221 yards as well as rushing 72 yards and scoring. The defense ended up outshining the offense overall.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts told reporters after their win, “Defense wins championships”, Hurts explained.
As for the Chiefs, in a press conference from Peoples Magazine reported, “I didn’t think I played to my standard just with especially the struggles that I had earlier in the season. There’s things I have to get better at and they kind of showed today on the biggest stage.” Mahomes explained.
His overall view of the performance he gave in the superbowl wasn’t the same as two years ago leaving Kansas fans disappointed. “I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it” Mahomes claimed.
A winning streak lost, disappointing Chief fans while a great comeback was achieved by the Eagles leaving everyone shocked at the turnout of Super Bowl 59.
