Elon Musk has raised concerns about government spending on Social Security and other benefit programs, claiming they are riddled with fraud and waste. During a recent interview, Musk suggested that the U.S. should cut between $500 billion and $700 billion in wasteful spending, with a primary focus on entitlement programs, which he believes are a major contributor to the federal budget deficit.
Musk’s statements, which were made during an appearance on Fox Business, highlighted his ongoing criticism of federal spending, especially programs like Social Security. He suggested that eliminating these programs could be a key part of his efforts to reduce government size. His remarks have already sparked unease among politicians from both political parties, especially as Musk’s approach to reforming government spending aligns with his broader stance on business management, marked by drastic cuts and layoffs.
The figures Musk mentioned regarding fraud in entitlement programs far exceed the official estimates provided by watchdogs. For example, the Social Security Administration’s inspector general reported improper payments totaling $71.8 billion between 2015 and 2022, which represents less than 1% of the total benefits paid out during that period. Musk also claimed that 20 million deceased individuals were still listed as alive in the Social Security database, though the agency has rejected these claims, stating that these individuals are not necessarily receiving benefits.
Musk’s skepticism toward Social Security is not new. He has previously criticized the program, even referring to it as “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time,” despite President Trump’s pledge to protect Social Security from cuts. Additionally, Musk accused federal entitlement programs of being a tool used by Democrats to attract and retain illegal immigrants, a claim linked to the controversial “great replacement” theory, which suggests that political elites are intentionally altering the country’s demographic makeup.
The interview, which took place in the White House, saw Musk acknowledging the unusual nature of his role in the administration. As the world’s richest person, Musk continues to lead his companies while also advising the Trump administration on federal spending. He expressed gratitude for Trump’s support, saying it was crucial for making progress on these issues.
Musk’s public statements have generally aligned with the Republican Party’s long-standing goal of reducing the size and scope of the federal government. Many Republicans, like Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina, have supported Musk’s efforts, arguing that Americans are fed up with government waste and corruption. However, some Republicans have also pushed back against proposed budget cuts. For instance, Oklahoma Rep. Tom Cole celebrated the preservation of three federal offices in his state, claiming they provide essential services.
Public opinion on Musk’s role in the administration is divided. A CNN/SSRS poll conducted in February revealed that nearly half of Americans view Musk’s involvement negatively, while only a third support it. Another poll by The Washington Post and Ipsos found a split in public perception, with some believing Musk’s efforts to cut spending target wasteful programs, while others worry about necessary programs being at risk.
