After nearly three decades at the helm of Versace, Donatella Versace is stepping down from her role as Chief Creative Officer, marking the end of an era for the iconic Italian luxury brand. She will transition into the position of Chief Brand Ambassador, continuing to play a pivotal role in shaping the house’s legacy and global influence.
Donatella took over creative leadership in 1997 following the tragic passing of her brother, Gianni Versace, the company’s legendary founder. Despite having no formal background in fashion design at the time, she successfully carried on his vision, transforming Versace into one of the most recognizable and revered names in haute couture.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy,” Donatella expressed in a heartfelt Instagram post. “He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity.”
In a separate tribute, she added, “I hope I’ve made you proud so far.”
Her tenure at the fashion house not only sustained but also modernized the brand, maintaining its signature bold aesthetics while pushing creative boundaries. Under her direction, Versace continued to captivate the fashion world, with its designs gracing red carpets and runways alike.
The Versace name has long been synonymous with celebrity culture, and under Donatella’s leadership, it remained a favorite among A-listers. Hollywood stars and global icons, including Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Naomi Campbell, Jennifer Garner, and Anne Hathaway have donned the house’s creations, reinforcing its status as a powerhouse of glamour and sophistication.
Speculation regarding Donatella’s departure began swirling after her appearance at the brand’s Milan Fashion Week show in February. The collection paid homage to Gianni Versace by drawing inspiration from his final designs for the Fall 1997 season, offering a poignant reminder of his enduring creative influence. Now, for the first time in its history, someone outside the Versace family will take the reins as Chief Creative Officer. Dario Vitale, formerly the design and image director at Miu Miu, will assume the role, ushering in a new chapter for the brand.
“Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me,” Donatella stated. “I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and I am excited to see Versace through new eyes.” Vitale, who stepped down from his position at Miu Miu in January, will officially begin his tenure on April 1.
“I am truly honored to join Versace as Chief Creative Officer and to be a part of this powerful and historic fashion house created by Gianni and Donatella,” Vitale said. “Versace’s heritage is unparalleled, having shaped the course of fashion for decades. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Donatella for her trust in me and for her unwavering dedication to this extraordinary brand.”
This leadership shift coincides with major changes in the brand’s ownership. As the Prada Group moves closer to finalizing its $1.6 billion acquisition of Versace from Capri Holdings, the company will join an esteemed portfolio that includes Prada, Miu Miu, Church’s, Car Shoe, Marchesi 1824, and Luna Rossa.
With Donatella stepping into her new role and Vitale set to take creative command, Versace stands on the precipice of transformation. While a new creative direction awaits, the brand’s legacy rooted in boldness, innovation, and unrelenting glamour remains firmly intact.
