Uconn women’s basketball team wins March Madness with their 12th national title against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
With determination and perseverance being the main theme throughout the Husky season, this win was everything the seniors needed for their last game with the Huskies. Star point guard Paige Bueckers gets emotional with head coach Geno Auriemma when the final buzzer hits and confetti falls for a Husky victory.
Power trio Azzi Fudd, Sarah Strong, and Paige Bueckers led the team to victory while dominating South Carolina. Fudd and Strong contributed 24 points for the Huskies while Strong pulled 15 rebounds. Bueckers gave 17 points and resulted in six rebounds which ultimately helped the team overall.
Paige Bueckers showcased her talents throughout the years on the court. Her freshman year she was the first to win AP player of the year, however during her sophomore year she got injured which likely took her out for most of the season limiting her play.
Bueckers stated in an AP news interview, “It’s been a story of resilience, gratitude of overcoming adversity and responding to life’s challenges.”
Throughout the nine year drought, the team continuously fell short of a win either losing to a buzzer beater and or being knocked out early, this year’s confidence radiated throughout the team and gave South Carolina practically no chance to get up.
While the state of Connecticut celebrates their team victory, many wonder what will happen next year when the former seniors leave. The question lingering, will there be a 13th national title for Uconn?
