Supreme Court Justice – Is what they are doing right?
From Anthony Kennedy, to David Souter, and even to Ruth Ginsburg there have been different men and even now to women there have been many leaders who have left an impact on not only the world but the people who live in it.
A new Supreme Court Justice has been elected by President Joe Biden. Although this seems like a great contribution to the court, many people are seeing it as something different.
The woman elected is Ketanji Brown Jackson. As more questions are being presented to Jackson, many people are seeing that race is more of an issue than the person who is running.
Many questions that are being asked have been different than what a white candidate would have to answer. Even with these questions being thrown at her, she has had a positive attitude and great perseverance throughout the whole process.
Jackson is black, meaning that if she would become supreme court justice she would be the first black woman to be part of the court. Not only is this a historical moment for her but also for many black activists and communities around the world.
The New York Times reports that many people are saying, “Jackson is being used in a political battle that has almost nothing to do with her or with the court.”
This means that politically since she is a democrat her race is being seen as a weapon, where in fact her race is who she is.
Not only has her race been a huge issue for many republicans on the court but before being elected Jackson was a judge and many people are using her court sentencing as a problem. Instead of people looking at what she can do they are looking at what she has already done.
Jackson had given less sentencing to many child predators because of age but many other judges had done the same.
This is such an issue for many other supreme court justices because they believe it means that she is letting people off with a warning more than just giving them another chance to do the right thing.
As a judge Jackson has seen the good and bad in people and that is something that will not block her judgment but allow her to be more open to ideas and solutions for the country and for its people.
Jackson had been volunteering before at a school and had given a book to the children. In the book a child says to another, “Go back to where you came from.”
Many people had seen this as saying the kids are racist and that they are not a good person because of this.
“I do not believe that any child should be made to feel as though they are racist, or though they are not valued, or though that they are less than, that they are victims, that they are oppressors,” Jackson said.
What Jackson wanted to show the kids is that everyone is equal in many different ways. But even if the court was trying to bring her down Jackson had known who she was and what impact she wanted to make.
Jackson was promised that it would be a respectful and dignified hearing instead she was questioned like she was the one on trial.
Even with getting hit with allegations that had questions who she was and what she believed in she had come back even stronger than what the court was hitting her with.
Maybe Jackson isn’t the right person for the court but looking at it she has shown people no matter where you come from, who you are, the color of your skin, or your gender, you can be someone, you can make a difference for not only yourself but others too.
